Soutpansberg

Soutpansberg (Vhembe) is one of five districts of the Limpopo province of South Africa. It is an array of mountains in the far north of South Africa. These mountains are interconnected by two narrow passes. Wyllie’s Poort allows South African National road traffic to pass from Louis Trichardt to Musina. The Waterport in the west contains the Sand River and the railroad line. Steeped in history, culture and natural beauty, Soutpansberg is an adventurer's dream.

A little history informs us that the first person to reach and name Soutpansberg formally known as Zoutspansberg, was Coenraad de Buys in 1820. Zoutspansberg means “Salt Pan Mountain”. Louis Tregardt, a voortrekker, moved into the area and he and his people later moved to find a trading route to the sea in 1837. The first settlement was in 1848 and by the year 1855, a flourishing ivory trading center was established trading ivory tusks of Asian and African elephants as well as other animals. In 1898, the first town named Louis Tricardt after Louis Tregardt, was established and is very well known in today’s society.

Soutpansberg is filled with many exciting exploration opportunities. The mountains, natural forests, mammals and other breathtaking scenic views are a treat to experience. Other choices include abseiling on the mountain, visiting crocodile ranches, attending the museum, going on safaris, birding and fishing. There are also very popular hiking trails for day and night hikes featuring peaks, waterfalls aged redwoods and pine plantations. The temperature is near perfection with sunshine year round, dry winters and pleasurable summers.

There are also a variety of accommodations to choose from. Bed and Breakfasts’ lodges, safari lodges, and hotels boasts privacy, comfort, en-suite chalets, friendly service, excellent food, swimming pools, spas, horseback riding and more. Spaces are also available for conferences and special events.
